Toronto, Canada — In a remarkable display of community empowerment and commitment to education, the Labourers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) Local 183 hosted its 27th Annual Scholarship Trust Fund Ceremony, awarding 129 scholarships to the children and grandchildren of its members and retirees. The event underscored the union’s unwavering dedication to investing in the future leaders who will continue to build stronger, more inclusive communities.
Since the establishment of the Scholarship Trust Fund in 2006, LiUNA Local 183 has awarded over $10.5 million to more than 1,100 recipients — a milestone that reflects the organization’s enduring belief in the transformative power of education. This year’s ceremony marked another chapter in that legacy, with $1,032,000 distributed among the 2025 recipients, each representing diverse academic interests and cultural backgrounds.
“It’s an honour to help our members and their families pursue their educational aspirations,” said Jack Oliveira, Business Manager of Local 183. “Our members work hard every day to build our cities. This initiative is about investing in their children and grandchildren — and in the futures they’re building for themselves.”

The ceremony, attended by LiUNA International Vice President and Canadian Director Joseph Mancinelli, celebrated not just financial support, but the values of solidarity, opportunity, and inclusion that define LiUNA’s mission. For decades, LiUNA has been a cornerstone of empowerment across Canada’s multicultural workforce — championing fair labor practices, diversity in skilled trades, and community development initiatives that uplift working families.
From supporting cultural events and youth mentorship to advancing workplace safety and training programs, LiUNA continues to build more than infrastructure — it builds futures. Through initiatives like the Local 183 Scholarship Trust Fund, the union reaffirms its belief that progress begins with opportunity, and that every investment in education is an investment in a stronger, more connected Canada.
