Building Community and Celebrating Legacy: LiUNA’s African American Canadian Caucus

By investing in initiatives that strengthen human connection and foster belonging, LiUNA Local 183 demonstrates that our union’s impact extends far beyond the job site. Together, we are building stronger, healthier, and more connected communities—because when we uplift our communities, we uplift our members.

As a Board Member of the LiUNA African American Canadian Caucus, I am proud to reflect on our history, mission, and ongoing impact. Since 1996, LiUNA has prioritized supporting its diverse membership through the Minority Advancement Department, and in 2001, this commitment led to the creation of caucuses, including ours.

Our Mission and Purpose

The mission of the African American Canadian Caucus is simple yet powerful: to identify, promote, and support the cultural, legislative, political, educational, and economic issues affecting LiUNA members of African descent. Through education, mentorship, voter empowerment, and community engagement, we amplify our members’ voices while strengthening the union as a whole.

Honoring Black History Month Through Action

As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor more than memory—we celebrate action. The resilience, leadership, and contributions of Black workers have shaped both our union and our communities. Standing on the shoulders of those who came before us, we continue their work by advancing equity, opportunity, and unity within LiUNA and beyond.

Community Engagement in Action

Community engagement is a cornerstone of our work. In partnership with LiUNA Local 183, our caucus proudly supported The Great Belong – Ontario Loneliness Initiative, in collaboration with the Seventh-day Adventist Church Ontario Conference. This year-long outreach program combats isolation by equipping local churches with practical tools to support seniors, new immigrants, single parents, youth, individuals with disabilities, and families with special needs across Ontario.

By investing in initiatives that strengthen human connection and foster belonging, LiUNA Local 183 demonstrates that our union’s impact extends far beyond the job site. Together, we are building stronger, healthier, and more connected communities—because when we uplift our communities, we uplift our members.

Continuing Our Mission

The African American Canadian Caucus remains committed to a dual mission: honoring our history while shaping a future defined by solidarity, opportunity, and empowerment. Every effort we make is a step toward a union—and a society—that reflects the values we hold dear.

In solidarity,
Anthony Tubbs
Board Member, LiUNA African American Canadian Caucus
